Labor Economics and Military Manpower Data

There is a wealth of data collected on national security issues that are now or can be made available to researchers. These data allow empirical examination of national security- and defense-related topics, and they can be of use to researchers in other fields looking for data to empirically test ideas and hypotheses from across the range of economic disciplines. This handout provides examples of the types of data that are available concerning military manpower and labor economics and contact information for how to obtain more information.

The Economics of National Security Association (ENSA) has been established to promote excellence in national security economics research. One of its core activities is to assist researchers in identifying relevant national security data and, for data that are not already publicly available, provide assistance in identifying the appropriate authorities to request release of the data. The primary consolidated source for data on military manpower is the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) .  DMDC provides access to data and information on their data holdings on their website; they can be contacted at dodhra.dodc-mb.dmdc.mbx.webmaster@mail.mil.   • The National Survey of Veterans: Administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs. It is not conducted regularly: the last two iterations were in 2001 and 2010, both focusing on veterans’ needs.

Pew Social and Demographic Trends Survey of Veterans


Administered two surveys in 2011, which were designed to explore veterans’ and nonveterans’ attitudes about the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

The American Time Use Survey

Has been administered by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the Census Bureau since 2003, and is an extension of the CPS. It is an in-depth survey in which a sample of CPS respondents are asked to provide a time diary of the previous 24 hours. It contains veteran status.

The General Social Survey


Administered by the National Opinion Research Center biannually to gather opinions on a variety of social and political issues. This nationally representative survey started in 1972 and contains an indicator for veteran status.

The Millennium Cohort Study


This study is a DoD-wide effort to examine the long-run health effects of military service. The study surveys Servicemembers from all military branches while they are on active duty and then continues surveying them after they leave the military. The study includes four cohorts of Servicemembers that started in 2001, 2004, 2007, and 2011. Each cohort is resurveyed every 3 years, and the study is currently funded to continue surveying these cohorts until 2022.Although not publicly available, it may be possible to obtain the data after going through their process.
