Martin Feldstein passed away yesterday, surrounded by family.
We will remember Marty as the founding President of our Economics of National Security Association. During the post 9/11 era, Marty advocated quickly and forcefully for increased attention among economists to security issues. He began teaching a course on the economics of national security, and founded a regular National Security meeting at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Since 2006 he had served on the Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board. The subsequent increase in high quality research we’ve seen on security issues was a source of great satisfaction for him –especially that of young scholars. It was also evidence of his prescience.
